Syracuse, NY. Just trying to earn a buck the fun way. Didn't feel up to racing until the gun went off. took it easy the first half (32 min) picked it up the second half. very windy and hilly. Surprised to beat JJ and to see how close I was to the leaders. No going back but I guess I could have run a little faster for the first half and stuck w/them.

Welcome back!!! Good to see you back on the blog! Running SGM...sweet I may see you there (I am either running it or the US Master's Marathon Championships at Twin Cities).

How has the training been going? What is your next race?

Say hi to Matt for me.

From MichelleL on Thu, May 08, 2008 at 09:51:26

Any chance Matt might join the blog? I have been trying to get Paul to join for some time now without success. My son Benji has joined now, since he is training for his first 5k.

From Katie on Fri, May 09, 2008 at 13:38:49

Hey, Jeff.

I'd pick the US Champs.

Training's been great(marathons are still too long though)

Next race is the Buffalo, NY 1/2 on May 25 or possibly the full 26.2, but, only if the weather is perfect and I think I could win more money in the full.

Hi, Michelle! Not sure if Matt will join the blog. He keeps his log on Athleticore.com and isn't so competitive about mileage as I am.

As a fellow New Yorker thought I'd say hi and also a great job on the mileage! I like your long term goal. A lot of us struggle with the final 10k!

From katie on Tue, May 13, 2008 at 13:55:52

Hi, Benn. Nice to meet you. Do you race much in NY?

How about you come run the Finger Lakes 50k in Hector, NY to get your ultra under your belt. It's a great race for first-timers. It's a very runnable course and also easy to drop if something goes wrong. Check it out at fingerlakesrunnersclub.org.

'tis a bummer you didn't get into SGM. So sorry.

From Benn on Tue, May 13, 2008 at 15:13:35

Hey Katie. Yeah I do a lot of races in New York. I am in grad school in Albany at St. Rose, but I do the 10k Turkey Trot in Troy, have done the 15k Stockadeathon in Schenectady for 5 years in a row now, and am planning on doing the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon in October for the second time.

Right now I am still battling a partial achilles tear in my right foot (since January 21st) so right now all I'm doing is a lot of bike riding as that doesn't aggravate the tendons at all.

I'd be really interested in looking at the Finger Lakes 50k. When is it? And is there a website?! That'd be really cool. I was going to do the Nipmuck Trail Marathon 26.4 mile marathon in CT on June 1st, but after I paid my entry fee I got sidelined by injury. :( What a bummer huh? I hope I get healthy so I can get out there training for the marathon and maybe this 50k!!

So what races are coming up for you Katie?

From Katie on Wed, May 14, 2008 at 12:36:26

Hi, Michelle.

Let's see....this weekend Lilac Festival 10k in Rochester, NY. Next weekend Buffalo 1/2 marathon in ...Buffalo, NY. I have a little bit of wanderlust this year and can't seem to stay home on the weekends. I'm trying not to take these races too seriously though, just throwing them in when I can for fun. I'll race seriously the Boilermaker 15k in July, Cow Harbor 10k in September and of course SGM in Oct.

From MichelleL on Wed, May 14, 2008 at 12:45:51

Races make for great tempo runs and they help you know where you might need a little work. I look forward to the race reports!

10 x 400(200 rec) + 4 x 200(200 rec) supposed to be done around 3k pace, just enough work to get some rust out and turn over going before Sunday's 10k but not enough to tire me out.
Felt pretty off today though. heavy & sore legs(from Tuesday's workout??) breakfast sitting in my gut like a brick, grumpy. 400's were all around 81-82 with only 2 or 3 sub-80. 200's were just under 38. It was windy but not that windy. Didn't work very hard and i guess it showed. Maybe this half-hearted workout will leave me feeling fresh for Sunday's race.... hmph.

I didn't dare dream this one!
The entire loop course is rolling with the first half slightly downhill. Surprisingly (and horrifyingly) I took the lead almost from the gun with the first mile WAY too fast in 5:25, went through the first 5k in my recent 5k pr (17:42) and then ran scared (terrified) the rest of the race. I knew from the start that the second uphill half would be difficult. Worked very hard to stay happy, relaxed and focused. Disappointed that I lost an entire minute in the second half but this was still an awesome race for me considering how hard I worked, how focused and together I kept myself and a pr by over a minute. I'm still pretty shocked and over-the-top happy.(and sore and tired!)

From MichelleL on Mon, May 19, 2008 at 12:19:26

Awesome that you got a PR by a minute, so hard to do when you are already so fast! Also, when you go out fast, and the first half is downhill, and second half is uphill, it's no surprise to have a slower 2nd 5k. Congrats again!

From Mark on Mon, May 19, 2008 at 12:43:38

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, May 19, 2008 at 18:47:59

Congratulations! Remember what I told you in St. George. You look like a 2:33 marathoner that is out of shape. I hope this race, especially the first mile of it, helped you catch a glimpse of your potential.

From Katie on Tue, May 20, 2008 at 07:44:11

Thanks, all!

Sasha, I think you are just a very optimistic person!

I am excited about seeing some progress though and I've been having so much fun since I quit wearing a watch (I discovered that my legs can't read splits. go figure!)

I've decided to jump in the full Buffalo marathon this weekend instead of the 1/2 (unless the day turns out to be too windy) For some reason, running the full 26.2mi seems easier than the 1/2. Less intensity I guess. I'll just taper a little more (though I hate slipping down on the mileage board!) and alter tomorrow's workout a bit. 3 marathons in 9 weeks might seem like a lot to the average bear but they don't seem to take anything out of me. On the contrary, they actually seem to give me a boost. The risk of trying again seems small. I just can't think of a reason not to try and get that last 10k under my control.

From MichelleL on Tue, May 20, 2008 at 07:50:58

Since most races are about learning how to race better, perhaps the best way to learn how to master the last 10K of a marathon is to be very conservative for the first 20, then kick butt the last 10K. Then the next marathon be conservative for the first 20 but not as much as the prior marathon, and still kick butt on the last 10K. Then the next marathon be only somewhat conservative for the first 20. What do you think?

From jtshad on Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:04:33

Congrats on the win and good luck at Buffalo this weekend.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, May 20, 2008 at 18:48:20

I second Michelle's approach.

While races up to the half-marathon are mostly about speed and somewhat about endurance, marathons are about speed, endurance, and health. You have the speed, plenty of it. Your training should have given you the endurance. But you are still crashing. I think it is the health.

Health is a tricky business. It is not about your iron, sodium, potassium, etc levels. It is more about the balance that is difficult to measure in a lab - too many things to measure and calculate. But a lot easier at the end of a marathon - if you do not feel good and cannot run fast, it is lacking.

For me the wall moved back past the finish line when I started paying better attention to my health. Check How to Break 2:30 in a Marathon in the Running Articles at the link above for details.

Began (total) fast last night (8:30pm)
2.5hrs gardening this morning,
12pm: 2 miles jogging  then 5 miles at what felt like tempo/MP effort (don't wear a watch anymore so don't know the pace) felt like i was pretty slow though. I think legs are still tired from Sunday's race more than from low fuel. End of the 5 mi felt like the part of the marathon that makes me want to quit. Really  uncomfortable. 2 more miles jogging w/Jax felt ok.
*Never tried this before but it has been suggested numerous times by several trustworthy coaches. Not much on the line in this upcoming marathon so I thought it would be a good time to give it a try. Fast breaks after tomorrow mornings 5 mile jog.
*sacrum sore at point of old stress fracture. hopefully from gardening and painting. if it persists, I will certainly do the 1/2 mar instead of the full.

broke 36hr fast. Learned that i can run on no fuel. This 5 mi run felt like the last part of a marathon, physically and mentally. very uncomfortable, but not impossible. Decided to see how it felt picking up the pace for the final mile (I don't wear a watch but Matt does) I suspected it was around 7min pace (if i was lucky) turned out to be about 6:15. go figure. Not sure if this will really cause my body to store more glyc, but I have learned that I can survive (and continue to run at a decent clip) on low fuel. (94.8lbs) Time to load.

So the purpose was to deplete glycogen and then reload? You'll have to let us know how it affects the marathon. Personally, I am not sure if there is anything that would induce me to fast for 36 hours. I think I would be in my bed for the last 24 hours of it.

From Kaite on Thu, May 22, 2008 at 17:29:30

Yeah, Michelle. It helped that 16hrs of it was while I was sleeping. I honestly wasn't sure if I would be able to do this (which is why I've put off trying it for about 5 years) It really wasn't as bad as I expected. I think a 36hr total fast as opposed to 3 days of allowing protein actually makes it easier (a 5k vs. a marathon) and I didn't feel ketotic as I have done during (extremely rare) times of limiting carbs. What I really fear is that I'll run well on Sunday and realize that I might have to do this again. I'm not really an advocate of loading but then, I haven't had much success feeling good at the end of a marathon either. I've read an increase of 30% of carbs is what you should shoot for. It's all a big guess to me, really.

From Jon on Thu, May 22, 2008 at 18:45:45

Are you doing another marathon on Sunday? Which one?

From Katie on Fri, May 23, 2008 at 07:21:37

Yes. Buffalo, NY. It was sort of a last minute decision. The weather forecast is near perfect and it's a flat course. It will be the third in 10 wks. The last two didn't work out. I ended up pretty much walking the last 10k of both and recovered just as though I had done a long run. In this one, the goal is only to run a solid final 10k. I recover so quickly, I just can't think of a reason not to give it a go.

From Jon on Fri, May 23, 2008 at 18:51:19

Katie- do you think some of your struggles at the end of marathons come from running them so often? I am a fan of Pete Pfizinger's "Advanced Marathoning", and he does not recommend racing a marathon more than 2-3 times a year and does not recommend training runs longer than 22 miles because they are so hard to recover from. I wonder if you feel like you recover quickly but actually don't get all the way back to 100% (which, if you didn't, would reveal itself at the end of a marathon).

That being said, if your main goal for this marathon is to practice only the last 10k, I would highly, highly recommend doing it how I did the Ogden marathon last Saturday- check out my blog. I went through the 1/2 marathon mark 5 full minutes slower than I could have and ran 20-30 seconds slower per mile than my potential all the way until mile 19. I then picked up the pace 30 seconds per mile until almost the end. The result? I passed tons of people in the last 7 miles and felt great. And I ran a 3.5 minute negative split! I would highly recommend trying this method if you want to work on your speed at the end of a race. The whole key is to go out VERY slow- it should feel rather easy for at least the first 13 miles. Try it and good luck!

From josse on Fri, May 23, 2008 at 21:06:48

I think Jon has a very, very good idea.

I don't think you should mess with your diet right before the marathon. I have tried the depletion and then carbo loading and the only results I got was coming down with a cold and getting constipated. But I hope for your sake it works.

From Jon on Sun, May 25, 2008 at 19:08:46

How did the marathon go? The last 10k? I saw you ran a 2:58, which I believe is your best time this year.

Felt great this morning but mentally didn't feel the usual drive to work hard. Not unusual at the start of a race for me but usually once the gun goes off it kicks in.. Today, the gun went off and I still only wanted to make an attempt at getting through 26.2 miles without any suffering (a solid long run).
Didn't wear a watch and there weren't many clocks on the course. I wasn't paying attention to time, only how I felt and fueling, so no splits. By recognizing people around me I knew I was starting at about 3:10 pace and didn't feel like I wanted to go any faster. This told me right from the start that it was going to be a slower race (which I knew it might be due to the last 10 weeks including 2 marathons, a 5k(pr), 10 mile race and 10k(pr). I wasn't concerned at all about the slowness as my goal was merely to avoid the dead legs and mental breakdown that I most always encounter in a marathon. The entire run felt like a jog. I attempted to pick up the final mile when I saw # 3 girl ahead of me but because of my(!#&*@#!) wonderful friends and husband cheering for me, she was alerted to my presence and I never caught her.
So, though the race was slow, I am content(well....sort of) I felt happy and comfortable the entire race. I encountered a couple of miles from 22-24 in which I wanted to be done running (marathons are way too long) but all in all, I felt strong the entire distance and now do not feel like I did anything more than a long run.
I was planning to take a break this week and swim instead of run but maybe I'll just do some slow jogging and get in some LSD miles on trails to recover.
I will definitely do the fast/load diet again.
No more marathons until SGM.

I was glad to read that you are not planning on anymore marathons until SG. I think that is a good idea, it will help you mentally recharge and be ready to race come Oct. I agree Marathons are a long way. I like to break them up into segments and then they pass much more quickly. Happy to hear it was a good experience. We all need those once in a while.

Are you saying you went downhill at 3:24-3:40 minutes per mile pace??? That is crazy fast!

From Katie on Wed, Jun 04, 2008 at 06:23:38

No. The "down" is attached to the 4 mile cooldown. They were uphill repeats. Not sure the pace.

From MichelleL on Wed, Jun 04, 2008 at 06:49:58

Are you shooting for 100 this week? That's quite a jump in mileage. . .

I won't be trying for a 100 mile week this year. Maybe next year.

From Katie on Wed, Jun 04, 2008 at 08:31:16

I'm simply trying to run as much as I am able. I think I'm on track for around 100. With the exception of fartlek-style workouts, it's all pleasantly slow, easy jogging. It's not too hard to make a big jump in mileage when there is no need to be rested for racing and when one runs by feel, not pace. Not wearing a watch helps. The key is jogging slowly enough that you can (and want to) go out and do it again and again,,,and again. I believe a large aerobic base is essential to success in racing almost any distance. You could hit 100 sooner, if you slowed down and ate more.

From MichelleL on Wed, Jun 04, 2008 at 09:18:32

I am totally eating plenty!

Yesterday (in order): Endurox protein drink (one scoop), Big bowl of oatmeal with raisins and brown sugar, trail mix w/m&m's, two slices whole wheat bread w/ a string cheese, all-bran crackers, a fat-free tuna salad and cracker pack, teddy grahams, two steak and eggs burritos (took out half of egg yolks), an extra scrambled egg on the side, an otter pop, two slices of whole wheat toast with jam (no butter). I estimate that at about 2800-3000 calories.

When I raise my mileage I get achy so I have to do it slowly and carefully. I am terrified of getting injured!

A.M. Long Hill Repeats - Boris strained his hamstring so, on my own today. I suck at hills and especially dislike doing them alone. It seems no matter the grade, it takes only a few steps for my quads to burn. Focus isn't so much on getting up the hill as fast as possible but on "bounding" (Arthur Lydiard style) keeping my head (and eyes) up, pushing off/up with each step, on my toes, staying focused the entire hill.

Sounds like a good tough workout. I guess you aren't tracking "Marathon", "threshold", paces? I am sure not all were easy. (ps I ate no candy bars or other junk today--I deserve a candy bar for that!)

From Katie on Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 06:27:22

Hi, Michelle! Great job on staying away from junk food!

When I first cut junk, I allowed myself Sundays and 1 week post-marathon to eat some of the things I thought I was missing out on. Now, I rarely feel like I'm missing anything. Fresh (and dried) fruit is such a treat to me. Usually just a taste of chocolate or even making a dessert(but not eating it) satiates me.

Right now though, the thought of a fluffy, white coconut cake with gobs of frosting is pervading my brain like a disease....could there be any way to create a healthy coconut cake?

No, I don't differentiate between types of running because I'm never totally sure and I guess, I don't care to take the time to figure that out. I could input "Hard" or "Easy" though. I don't have a watch and so, never really know my paces, unless I'm running with someone else.

From Maria on Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 16:41:03

These Lydiard bounding hill workouts are really tough. I did them in 2006 in my winter base training, and they killed me every time. I was only going about 100m up, but on a pretty steep grade, and my quads and glutes were absolutely burning (and then turning into rubber) already half way through.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 16:57:56

Boris' injury kept him alongside me or behind me instead of 10 seconds ahead of me for each one which I think helped me stay more focused.
Tempted to take the evening off....does anyone really need 3 workouts in one day? My energy is great though. Besides needing more sleep, my increased mileage doesn't seem to effect me.

Katie,

When I was training for Ironmans and 1/2 Irons I was able to pull off 3-a-days two or three times a week. I haven't been trainig at that level for two years and it feels like I've lost the ability to put in 20 - 25 hours of training a week. I'm trying to find the key to get back to that energy level. I'm a little frustrated, knowing its in me but just unable to make it click. What are you doing to maintain that level of energy?

From Katie on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 09:03:41

Well, you got me out the door for a third workout. Thanks.

I think I'm a naturally hyper-active person. I'm simply physical, always moving. If not tired out from running, then my house and gardens are in tip-top shape. I'm also very motivated to improve my running economy.

I did start taking Energy-Ease and Recover-Ease a few months ago and notice a marked difference in my energy/recovery levels.

You have your daughter running with you? Way cool. Mine refuses running, although she is a competitive swimmer and runs x-country for her school. But she doesn't like running and always complains about her shins. Maybe later this summer I can convince her to run as a form of cross training when she will not have a pool available.

From Katie on Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 08:24:38

Thanks, Josse and Adam. I'm pretty happy w/my jogging around lately. It's always fun.

Maria, yes, all my children like to run. It's like brushing your teeth around here though, just something that you do every day. I really try to stay out of it though, let them do their own thing and not put pressure on them(which is almost unavoidable in my situation) I am always very happy when they want me to be a part of their running though.

Has your daughter been to a good running store that will do a gait analysis to be sure she's in the right shoes? Running in pain is never fun (or advisable).

7 AM Ithaca RecWay Father's Day 50k - Unofficial 50k run w/friends. Mostly very slow, picked up the pace toward the end with Todd Baum (training for his second Badwater). Several ultra-marathoners and Ironman(& women) and several from the club jumped in for parts of the run. The whole run felt very comfortable, like a mini-party, and while I was certainly ready to be stop running after 31mi, I didn't feel depleted or as though I couldn't go on if necessary. You actually make running 31 miles sound fun! How long did it take you?

From katie on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 08:21:54

It was fun, Jossee! I don't know how long it took me (still don't own a watch) I stayed with the group almost the entire run and they stopped often to refuel (and chat). It was all very slow. I only picked up the effort for the 6-7mi.

My idea is to do a few of these over-distance runs during this Base/Strength phase so that quality 18-22 milers later on won't seem so daunting. Last weekends long run was only 23 miles but it was all on trails and took over 4 hours. Usually 20 milers take less than 2:20 for me, so this is a huge jump in time on my feet. I have yet to make my coach (or husband or training partner) understand why I think this is important though.....

Something happens on race day to help the leg turn over. I am sure you'll do great.

The one mile race will be a great workout. I only raced the 1500m once in college. I ran the equivalent of just under 5:00 if it were a mile. Then coach send us over to another track (the meet was still going on) and we ran two more mile repeats. Perhaps you can consider doing that, since this race is more of a training experience than a destination race.

Since you are a marathoner you can't expect a super speedy mile, but I bet you can do a 5:15 never the less.

From Katie on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 07:53:34

Thanks, Michelle. Hopefully you're right. 5:15 might be a stretch for me right now though. I think my PR is 5:16 (on 100mi wks and marathon training) But sometimes magic happens, I can hope.

The Ithaca Mile precedes the Ithaca Parade & Festival. All four of my children are running the event too. I'm actually doing this simply for fun (ha!) not really for training(so no repeats afterward, I'll be lucky to get in a cool down) I'm taking more seriously the 1hr event on Saturday.

How are your shins?

From MichelleL on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 10:07:05

My shins have been fine. Just some occasional twinges (about 2 twinges a run). My groin still has some soreness but is slowly getting better.

The hard thing is we may be in the best shape we've been in, but we'll never run the mile to potential if we are truly focusing on the marathon. About a month ago Sasha asked what I could do a mile in all out. I was like, "Probably 5:55." (I can't remember my exact answer but something like that). That was just a couple of weeks after tax season, but the principle holds.

Great job on a 5:19!!! That is a sweet time. At first I thought you just did that for a little speed in an afternoon run, then I remembered it was a race.

From Katie on Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 10:45:06

Hey, Michelle. It hurt. It wasn't fun. My training buddies kicked my butt. I don't think the 50k was very good prep. I felt dead legged, no pep at all. One more long run and then I'll get back to some speed. (Obviously necessary!)

From MichelleL on Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 11:27:43

From what I have read, runs of more than 22 miles take so long to recover from that they interrupt your training. From traditional running literature it seems 22-24 mile seem to be the right balance between getting the distance we need but not trashing our bodies. I don't mean to criticize, but to see what your rationale is. Shoot, if I ran a 40 miler that would only leave 30 miles for the rest of the week, I guess I'd be able to sleep in!

From Katie on Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 12:14:46

It is not rational! You're totally right. 40 is way too long! But, lately I've needed/wanted a break from all the racing, specific workouts and restraints on my mileage. Helping my friends train for their Ultras feels rewarding to me. These long runs have been totally fun and enjoyable, even if not correct training, it's a nice break. Come Monday, it's back to more sensible training and then I think I have 13wks 'til my goal 10k and 2wks after that will be SGM. Plenty of time to get in shape...right?

From MichelleL on Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 12:49:09

Of course there is. But I don't think you are out of shape :) Did you know I am targeting PF Chang Phoenix for January? If you have unlimited funds (ha,ha!) you could come and do the 1/2 or full. Should be fun.

From Katie on Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 13:08:09

Yes. Where's my drip line?

From MichelleL on Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 12:52:09

If the 10k is the goal for the next couple of years, I would cut back your mileage once you feel like you've got your base under you, maybe in two weeks or so, to no more than 90 miles, but 80 may be what it takes. Then you will be fresher for a good 8 week speed cycle where you focus on 10k training. With 100 mile weeks, I am not sure you can be fresh enough for the speed workouts you'll want to do. I could share some 10k workouts we did in college, since the 10k was my event, and Coach Shane at BYU is world renown.

From Katie on Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 13:00:19

I'd love to see what you consider a solid 10k workout. I'm going to start with a basic 800 workout on Tuesday (as suggested by my coach).

I don't try to hit any specific mileage, just a range. I run how I feel and make certain that I'm fresh for the key workouts(which I didn't do last night!) I like to run 2x day, which seems to pile miles up quickly.

Katie your training is absolutely mind boggling. I definitely don't know how you do it! Your drive and determination are absolutely amazing! If I did a 31 mile run for fun I would certainly be out the rest of the week :-P; I believe a lot of my success in 2007 was more consistent training as well as frequent treadmill runs which trained my legs to run at a faster and consistent pace :) GO TREADMILLS!

From Katie on Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 15:08:24

Thanks, Benn. The 31 miles was really slow, just a jog with power hiking up some hills and stopping every so often for my friend to practice taking in fuel. Consistent training, more than quality training, is definitely the key to any success I have had also. And I love treadmills too!

and..."drive and determination" might also be labeled as obsessive compulsiveness and bullheadedness!

Cut the run a bit short. Chris got tired/dizzy around 30mi (sun, heat (80), humidity taking their toll on her) & my arch started hurting out of nowhere at @ 29mi. Really awesome 7 hours of jogging in the woods. I  fueled with 1 bottle of coffee flavored Silk at 15mi and 30mi and didn't feel like anything  more was needed. We hiked the steep hills & stopped for Chrissy to fuel a few times. Felt great entire run. This was my longest run ever. Really tempted to race an ultra but I suppose it's time to get back to other things. Maybe next year.

PM. Skipped my morning run.legs felt more tired than usual last night. would rather nail afternoon workout than climb mileage board (or so i say)

Plan: Progression Run. 2mi MP, 2mi 1/2 MP, 2mi fast (continuous)

Wore the heart rate monitor. warm up 136-144. first mile 7;45, 2nd mile hr went down and was 7 min/mi. stopped paying attention to pace and just focused on running.
Moved into MP pace and HR moved up to 150-153 held steady for @ 13 min before moving into faster pace, felt better after shifting the pace up, HR 160-165, then shifted to faster pace and felt really uncomfortable - quit - stopped running for about 5 breathes, HR dropped very quickly to 119 - got right started with 2 miles of fast running. HR 170 - felt really uncomfortable like 5k effort - jogged giant hill, got hr down to 119 again, did 2 x 3min fast (hr 170) 3 min rest 2 x 45 seconds fast (hr 170) jogged home HR 150-139
not sure what any of this means. maybe just that i'm a wimp and don't like getting my hr up. i think my max is 188. 170 was yucky though. around 163-5 was the sweet spot until a hill popped up - i think my legs are tired anyway. next week i'll add the pace to the hr just for kicks. mostly i think it is a waste of a fun run to  spend time thinking about these details. better just to run hard. have good time. speed play.

Hi, Josse. Yup, I'm doing the Boilermaker 15k in Utica, NY.

What's your next race?

From josse on Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 13:42:10

I am running Bryce Canyon half marathon next sat. It is a fun one. Good luck and rip it up, I love the 15k distance.

From MichelleL on Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 13:49:44

Good luck on the 15k. Is it trail? Point to point?

From Katie on Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 16:10:05

I'm sad about SGM, too.

Boilermaker is the largest 15k road race in the US, a World Class race, point to point and fairly hilly.

From MichelleL on Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 17:40:00

Wow that course looks challenging! I'm sure your hill repeats should help you out.

From Katie on Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 18:36:40

I am fairly coming out of my skin with this drop in mileage....I can't wait for those hills! This isn't a goal race, really a test to see if I did in fact gain any strength during this last period of training. It's also good for me to jump out of the fish bowl, into the sea and get my 'behind' kicked every now and again too. I doubt I'll break into the top 15-20 women.

Boilermaker 15k, Utica, NY. bummer. just not into it today. ran first 4 miles very conservatively, probably too conservatively (6:18/mi) increased pace throughout the race. never felt like "racing" though. more like a tempo run, unmotivated, uninspired, bored.
positive side: -hill training seems to have paid off, passed people going up (a first)
                    -didn't start too fast
                    -finished strong, fast
-wore trainers, didn't get injured or increase current pains
-coming home to matt and jackson
negative: -was too hesitant, afraid to come close to the edge, need to figure out why I didn't give a "race" effort today.

               - felt my lack of 10k threshold runs

Hey Can't win them all... sorry to hear about the bad race. It sounds like there were some positives from it though. Concentrate on moving ahead. Don't dwell on the past. Save it for the next race :)

From MichelleL on Sun, Jul 13, 2008 at 22:18:53

That is actually a great time if you ask me. I think that given the hills, it would be equivalent to a 56 something flat 15k, which would predict a marathon PR for many marathons, especially since your PR is at St G. So perhaps you are being hard on yourself. I know its hard to be happy when you know you had more in the tank than you gave, but perhaps that's even more reason to be happy. So you are in GREAT shape but need to "show up" a little better at the race, it just shows that you've got some good races ahead of you when you show up ready to race.

Maybe now I'm glad you aren't coming to St. G!!! Just kidding, I'd much rather have you come and bump me down than to not come :(

From josse on Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 09:33:21

I think it is good what you have done with listing the + and -. It gives you something to look back at and draw from. I like to do this when I don't have a good race. I wish I could figure out the same thing. How to dig deep and put it all on the line on race day. It is still a very respectable time:)

From Paul Petersen on Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 10:26:18

Yeah, it's good to find both good and bad in a race. Keeps you sharp, but without beating yourself up too much.

How did you like the Boilermaker? I've wanted to do it sometime. I hear there's free beer.

From Katie on Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 16:18:22

Hey, guys. Thanks for the words.

Paul, yes, Boilermaker does have free beer at the end of the race, and I suppose if your idea of fun is standing around with a bunch of sweaty, stinky people, recapping the monotony of putting one foot in front of another again and again while quickly becoming inebriated by way of watery, warm piss-like beer, you might enjoy it.

Better to go for the competition than the post-race party.

From Mark on Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 05:43:49

It's a good pace for an off race and at least there were some positives. So, if that is your time on a bad day you should have an awesome pace on your next good race. I had heard this race was supposed to be fun but maybe it is overrated.

From will on Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 22:30:28

Still a really impressive time!

Keep grinding the miles and working hard, the golden days when racing seems effortless will surely arrive...

From MichelleL on Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 23:28:40

imo, if racing seems effortless you probably aren't racing or having a rare euphoric race. I think they always hurt, its just a question of what pace you're going.

From will on Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 11:34:13

3x1 mile @ 10 seconds faster than goal race pace, 800m rest between

25x400m @ goal race pace but no more than 2-3 sec faster than goal race pace, 30 sec rest between. This workout starts easy but gets harder and harder

4x1200 @ 5k pace, 800m rest

we did 400m at 3k pace, 200m rest

Not too useful, but the most memorable are the 25 400's and the mile repeats. Very tough.

Thanks, Michelle!

Those are pretty standard workouts.

They're actually similar to what I do for marathons, only a little less "beefy" (except for the 400 workout, that's a good one. I've maxed at 30x 400/200rec doing the last 5 all out--fun, fun)

Got anything else a little more challenging?

From MichelleL on Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 23:14:51

Not really. I think each workout doesn't need to kill you, that can be counterproductive, but if you want it harder you can increase the number of reps and/or increase the pace.

One interesting workout Alberto Salazar gave Amy Begley she describes in an interview at http://track.flocasts.org/videos/series/view_video/234035-2008-olympians/67909-amy-begley-uncut

She did a couple of 600 meters in a workout with times she described as "boy times" (1:39) but it was that speed workout that gave her the confidence to do such strong splits at the end of the OTQ 10000m race and hit the Olympic standard.

6 AM (s#*$#! this is way toooo early!!!)
Cass Park (2mi flat, winding, asphalt loop measured every 1/4 mi) w/the girls (Katie & Erin)
*5 mile continuous tempo run, accurately measured and flat.
GI trouble again during 3mi warm up, did a few strides and some dynamic stretches to try to get into it but wasn't wanting at all to do a workout. fatigued, bored, unmotivated. it's way early in the morning for this.
Started the tempo run at what felt like hard marathon pace. 6:03. go figure, thought it would be 6:30. felt really easy, started thinking I might have fun....next mile 5:57, okay now, that was smooth, fast enough.easy. somehow lost time on the next 2 miles, not sure where those seconds went. picked up my effort only to remain practically the same pace for the last mile (6 flat)...oh well, at least it felt good and I was having a little fun, didn't work too hard to make it faster though so can't complain. 30:10 for 5mi, pretty average workout and standard pacing for me but usually I have someone faster to run with and am more motivated and usually it feels more like work. will try to stick to the plan and wait for my desire to train to return.

Come on! 6am is way reasonable! And look how well you were able to run even though it was early. I wish 6:00 felt so easy for me.

Wow! I think this is an awesome workout! Esp. considering how you were feeling. Stop being so hard on yourself!!!

Was that a race you did? Your miles are up there, whats your next race?

From jtshad on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 15:48:09

Katie, where did you go?

From Katie on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 16:04:13

Hi,Jeff.

I went back to Athleticore.com. where girls don't cry after tempo runs and workouts and races are done without the assistance of gravity or pulleys. Not that I don't believe that there is more than one way to skin a cat, I just find this other approach to be a little.....less fluffy.

and sometimes I cuss.

Are you going to the Master's Marathon Champs?

I'm going to the USATF 8k and 10k Champs and a bunch of XC races in NE. Really looking forward to the chance to run some shorter races.

How is your training coming?

From Katie on Wed, Oct 01, 2008 at 13:30:35

Hi, Matt.

For a minute, I thought you were my husband, matt, asking me how my training was coming so that I could have an opportunity to brag!

I just finished a kick-butt short hill workout this morning. It was 16 x wicked steep short hill which used to take me an entire minute of suffering but now takes me 51-52 second.

(Oh, just to clarify, around these parts we run UP the hills in our workouts)

To answer your question, my racing has been recently slow, but my training has been going just as planned (except for the lower mileage- i'm no athleticore.com now) I'm hopeful that I'll pull off a good 10k in Boston on Oct. 13.

Good luck at SGM! That is such a fun run.

Do you really grow spaghetti in your garden? You must have amazing soil! my garden only yields the makings of the sauce.

From Matt on Wed, Oct 01, 2008 at 13:34:29

Sounds like you are doing great. spaghetti squash yes noodles no, but your right I only used my makings for the sauce.

Must be beautiful up there right now. I love New York in the fall.
